About Us
The most significant feature of the Albury Wodonga Community College is that it is
a registered senior secondary school operating within an Adult Learning Environment.
Since opening in January 2006 the balance between operating a registered school of this kind
and operating within an Adult Learning Environment has been very successful. Adult learners not
only have significant life experience, but are also positive role models and advocates for the
essence of Lifelong Learning. Alternatively, having young people within the Adult Learning environment
has bridged the gap between young and old, and has provided older learners with more understanding
of the issues faced by our youth, and exposure to the culture of young people in today’s society.
Our philosophy is to give young people, through the VCAL and the learning environment, the opportunity
to choose their education, and the chance to succeed to the best of their ability.
Because students at our school are beyond compulsory school age, students are aware that they do
not have to be here, just as the adult learners have chosen to enrol in a particular course at the AWCC.
Students at AWCC have the freedom to come and go and they are made aware of the consequences
of the choice they make. They are encouraged to consider the impact of late arrivals, early departures
and absences on the rest of the class. If they miss work, they must approach the teacher to get the work
to catch up on; otherwise, when it comes up in an assignment or unit assessment, it is not our (staff) issue.
We try to empower students to make choices for themselves, and to take responsibility for their own
learning and the choices they make.
